TIRUNELVELI: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday appreciated Tamil Nadu Government’s decision to constitute an expert committee to study the safety aspects of the KKNPP.Addressing a public meet at Tirunelveli in support of the KKNPP organised by the TNCC, he said the committee to be formed by the State should also examine the two reports already submitted by the Central Expert Committee on the plant.Chidambaram said that the new panel should take into consideration the findings of the Central panel reports before submitting its report to the State government. He also urged the TN government to extend support in commissioning the KKNPP. Launching an attack on S P Udayakumar, convenor of PMANE for boycotting the Central expert panel when it had come for the fourth round of talks on Jan 31, Chidambaram asked what Udayakumar and his supporters were doing when the work on K-Plant started 22 years ago. Informing that the Centre was continuing its investigations into the flow of foreign funds to the movement against the K-plant, he said that if it was proved, then law would take its own course.Stressing that electricity was crucial for the naton’s development, he pointed out that China had generated 5 lakh MW in the last five years. But, India couldn’t even achieve the target of 78,000 MW that was envisaged in the 11th plan. “We have produced not even 58,000 MW during the last five years,” he regretted.China was able to achieve their target because it wasopen to nuclear, thermal, solar and other possible sources for production of electricity. Detailing the per capita consumption of electricity in different countries, Chidambaram said that while it was 13,000 and 2500 units in the US and China respectively, in India it was 502 units.Other senior Congress leaders, including Union Minister G K Vasan and TNCC president D S Gnanadesikan, K V Thangabalu, EVKS Elangovan and Krishnassamy, also spoke at the meeting.
