Bangalore: Former Director General of Police of Karnataka Shankar Bidari has sparked off a controversy on Saturday by saying that all corrupt people should be shot dead in the public. Addressing an event he said that all corrupt IAS and IPS officers should be shot dead in open or else corruption cannot be controlled. He said that law should be strengthened to eradicate corruption and that people should have fear of the law.
Bidari said that complaints must be filed against the culprits and they must be convicted within two years. He added that corrupt political leaders who are making crores of rupees should also be shot dead in public.
Bidari's statement has led to a raging public debate across the state. Bidari later clarified to a leading Kannada news channel TV9 that his statement is being misinterpreted by the media.
Bidari, a 1978 Batch decorated and controversial IPS officer had earlier served as Bangalore Police Commissioner, Intelligence Chief and the chief of Special Task Force (STF) constituted to nab forest brigand Veerappan. He was accused of violating human rights during his stint as the STF chief. He was removed from the post of DGP after the Karnataka High Court made scathing remarks on him. He went to the Supreme Court and got the High Court order annulled.
After his retirement in 2012, Bidari had joined the Congress. The Congress denied him Assembly ticket in the May 2013 polls. He later became the state president of Samajwadi Party (SP). He has recently resigned from the SP after a public spat with its lone MLA in Karnataka CP Yogeshwar. Bidari was very close to JH Patel and BS Yeddyurappa during their tenure as chief minister.
