Karan Singh on J&K: 'It's complicated'
Karan Singh expressed dismay over not being consulted on the J&K issue by any the Govt. in the last four decades.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Karan Singh has said the situation in the militancy-hit state of Jammu and Kashmir was difficult to improve till ties with Pakistan were bettered.

He expressed dismay over not being consulted on the issue by any Government in the last four decades.

Singh also stated that the Indian intervention should have come a little earlier.

He traced the genesis of the terrorism to the release of terrorists in lieu of then Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's abducted daughter.

"I cannot say anything about the outcome of the ongoing roundtable conference in Srinagar. But the fundamental issue is that till the time our relationship improves with Pakistan, any improvement in this unfortunate situation is difficult," he said.

In a wide-ranging interview to the Hindi 'Outlook', he said, "First let us see how far this process goes. There are many aspects."

"The people in the three parts of Jammu and Kashmir and the two parts in Pakistan have different ideologies. We cannot expect a permanent solution till a holistic view is taken and the concerns of each part is understood," he explained.

When asked whether he had any formula, he said, "The matter has become so complicated that what is the point if nobody accepts the formula."

"But first let the Indian Government make up its mind on what to do because while my views are sought on all other issues, my opinion has never been solicited on the Jammu and Kashmir issue," he said.

"I have been in national politics for 40 years but no Government has sought my views. I don't know the reason for it. Perhaps, they think that I have an independent view on it," he said.

What's your reaction?
