Hailing from Chennai, Balasubramaniam belongs to the 1978 IPS batch. He entered the service as ASP of Munnar and afterwards Shoranur. Later, he served as SP of Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts. He also held the posts of DIG, Special Branch; ADGP, Vigilance and Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner. He had a stint with the RPF as well.He was selected by a panel headed by Chief Secretary K Jayakumar, and Principal Secretary of Home Department Sajan Peter and DGP Jacob Punnoose as members.
