New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Amardeep Singh Gill, Manu Sharma's co-accused in the Jessica Lall murder case, who had earlier been sentenced to four years in prison by the Delhi High Court.
Gill had been convicted under Sections 201 (destruction of evidence) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) in connection with the murder.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan allowed the release of Gill alias Tony on bail on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and a surety of the same amount. The Bench has also directed him to surrender his passport.
Manu Sharma, who is undergoing life term in Tihar jail, has also moved the Supreme Court seeking bail.
The court on Monday also fixed July 17 to hear Manu Sharma's appeal. Manu Sharma, the main convict in the case, has challenged his conviction and life sentence given by the Delhi High Court, saying that the trial court had acquitted him after an elaborate trial and after appreciating the oral and documentary evidence.
He has contended that he did not get a fair trial in the high court because of the media pressure, adding that through malicious and vicious campaign the media had browbeaten the high court judges as well as his counsel preventing free and fair hearing.
The high court had held Manu guilty for killing Lall at a South Delhi restaurant owned by socialite Bina Ramani on the intervening night of April 29-30, 1999. Manu is the son of senior Congress leader Venod Sharma.
Vikas Yadav, son of controversial Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav, was also convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment for destroying evidence. The court has already rejected his bail plea.
