BHUBANESWAR: State-owned Orissa Hydro Power Corporation Limited (OHPC) will invite international bidding for renovation and modernisation of two of the seven units of its hydro-power generation station at Burla (Hirakud-I) at a cost of ` 297 crore. “The corporation will invite international bidding for renovation and modernisation of unit-5 and unit-6 of the Hirakud-I power station in the next 10 days,” OHPC Managing Director Sahadev Khatua told mediapersons. The project approval committee headed by Chief Secretary B K Patnaik on Thursday cleared the OHPC’s renovation, modernisation and operating (RM&O) proposals. The detailed project report (DPR) for the renovation was ready and the installed capacity of the two units will be enhanced to 43 MW each from their present capacity of 37.5 MW, Khatua said adding the renovation became necessary because the two units are 47 years old and unable to function effectively. State-of-the-art technology would be adopted for upgradation to achieve highest level of efficiency, he said. The installed capacity of Hirakud-I hydro-power generation station at Burla would be enhanced to 286.5 MW from the existing 275.5 MW, he said and added that an additional 218 million units will be generated after renovation. OHPC is planning to upgrade the capacity of all its power stations in order to achieve maximum hydel power generation in the State, he said. OHPC’s seven hydro-power generation stations including the one jointly owned by the Andhra Pradesh Government at Machhkund in Koraput district have a total installed capacity of 2,062 MW. The average hydro power generation is 850 MW only due to different reasons, the poor hydro position in the major reservoirs being the primary one. In a normal hydro year, the peak generation of OHPC is more than 1500 MW. OHPC’s proposed 320 MW Sindol hydro-generation project in the downstream of Hirakud reservoir in joint venture with NHPC is facing rough weather due to opposition by local people.
