Integrated sculpture course launched

An integrated sculpture course in traditional Indian Carving has been launched at Amrita Shilpa Kalakshetra, a centre for development and sustenance of arts and crafts at Poonkulam, near Vellayani, in the district.

 The course, integrated with the HRD programme of Development Commissioner - Handicrafts (DCH), Government of India, will provide free training for one year. It will include a preliminary foundation course of three months for skillful beginners. The course will be followed by another one year of advanced training in all mediums like wood, stone, bronze, cement and other media to very select students.

 Inaugurating the course, renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman, who is also the advisory chairman of Amrita Shilpa Kalakshetra, said that it is imperative to safeguard and spread our culture, especially the non-performing arts like sculpture. He said that sculpture has played a pivotal role in the perpetration of the ancient heritage of India.

 Swami Poornamritananda Puri, general secretary of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, released ‘Shilpamritam’, a unique book on ‘Thalapramanam’, the ancient science of sculpture, on the occasion. Compiled by Suvarna Kallelil, the book has been published by Amrita Books, the publications division of Mata Amritanandamayi Math. The first copy was received by Kanipayur Parameswaran Namboodiripad.

 A mural painting of Mata Amritanandamayi was also unveiled by K K Marar. A vocational training format of the HRD programme of the Development Commissioner-Handicrafts for a duration of three months in utility wood products and crafts too was launched, which was inaugurated by Kanipayur.
