KOCHI: The installation of Mar George Alencherry, who has been elected the new Major Archbishop of SyroMalabar Church, will be held on Sunday at St Mary's Basilica, Ernakulam, the cathedral church of the SyroMalabar Church.
SyroMalabar Church Curia Bishop Bosco Puthur will preside over the installation ceremony. Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop of SyroMalankara Church, Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), and the 44 bishops of the SyroMalabar Church will be present at the ceremony. The representatives of priests, religious organisations and laity of all SyroMalabar dioceses and especially those of the Archdiocese of ErnakulamAngamaly will participate in the installation ceremony. After the installation, the new Major Archbishop will preside over the rest of the Holy Mass.

Union Minister of State for Food and Agriculture K V Thomas and V C Sebastian, secretary, SyroMalabar Commission for Laity, extended their greetings to the newly elected Major Archbishop. Mar Alenchery, who was ordained as priest on December 18, 1972, was a second rank holder in BA(Economics) from the Kerala University(1965).

During his ministry, he held many offices, including director of catechetics, deputy secretary of KCBC, director of Pastoral Orientation Centre, Palarivattom, and professor, Powrastya Vidyapeetam, Kottayam.

Curia Bishop Mar Bosco Puthur inaugurated the Synod session on Monday to elect the new head of the SyroMalabar Church. Mar Valiamattom was elected the president of the election Synod. The electoral process was over in the first two sittings. Mar Alenchery read out his willingness to accept the election before the Synod. The papal approval came on Wednesday. ENS
