Mumbai: Within hours of the women inmates of Byculla Jail here finding out about the death of another inmate Manjula Shetye, Indrani Mukerjea was the only one who kept asking for access to the media.
This was revealed to CNN-News18 by a top government official on condition of anonymity.
"Within some time of the protest, Indrani sought access to media and to a lawyer," the official said.
He also claimed that there were no injury marks on Indrani's body till June 26. On Wednesday, Indrani told the special CBI court that she suffered injuries on hands, legs and face, after being assaulted by the jail staff.
Countering the claim, the senior official said, "On 26 June, Indrani complained of minor bodyache. So she was immediately taken to JJ hospital. During check-up, no injury marks were found on her body. She was given a tablet for bodyache, and was sent back to the prison.”
"Why would you seek access to media within no time of the protest?" he asked.
Indrani has been booked for rioting in the women's prison. She was produced in court on Wednesday after she moved an application on Tuesday alleging that she was roughed up by jail officials when inmates protested the death of a 45-year-old woman prisoner Shetye.
Special CBI judge J C Jagdale on Wednesday said that Indrani be first taken for a medical examination and later to the police station (Nagpada) to file her complaint.
On Tuesday, the CBI court, which is hearing the Sheena murder case, had directed prison authorities to produce Indrani before it on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, narrating the incident, Indrani told the court that she was threatened and assaulted after she said that she will give a statement (in connection with the case) to a magistrate under the provisions of section 164 CRPC, which unlike a police statement is admissible in court.
Indrani Mukerjea, prime accused in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, is lodged in Mumbai's Byculla prison.
On Tuesday, she had filed an application before the special CBI court that she was threatened of sexual assault by the jail staff. She told the court on Wednesday that Manjula Shetye, who died in prison, was tortured by the prison's women staffers. She said that she too faced injuries after the police beat up the women prisoners when they resorted to protest.
Indrani was allegedly instrumental in leading the protest of the women inmates after Shetye's death.
