Bangalore: Twenty mechanical engineering students of a Bangalore college have designed and put together a Formula-racing car.
This team will be India's first entry for a Formula racing car fabrication contest to be held in Australia in early December.
The car, which took two years to be put together, has a 60cc second-hand engine from Yamaha that has been modified to suit a racing car need.
When asked about the reason for designing the car, team leader Arun Raj said, "It was a passion for motor sports that started it all."
For the team and their professor M R Srinivas at the RV College of Engineering, the aim was to build a machine that is more powerful than any other non-racing Indian car and more powerful than a Mercedes.
When the car was finally launched for a test drive on Wednesday afternoon, half of the college gathered to watch and cheer them on.
"The contests expects us to put together a racing car that's economical. There are some pricing and other restrictions," added Raj.
The team is busy giving a few finishing touches and it will be a few more days before the car and its team gets set to go to Australia.
