In This Telangana Village, 120-year-old British Era Buildings Still Stand Tall
Locals claim it was built 120 years ago and it served as a navigation centre near the Godavari River for the colonial administration.

Britishers ruled India for more than 200 years and built many buildings in due course of time. While some were demolished after their exit others remained intact. The Britishers built buildings which served as the administration centres for them to navigate the area. Similarly, during their stay, the Britishers built several buildings at Dummungudem village in Bhadradari Kothagudem district of Telangana. These buildings are still standing as a testimony to the history of that time.

Locals say that John Kevin, a Britisher, built many buildings in the centre of Dummugudem village in Dummugudem mandal of Kothagudem district. They claim it was built 120 years ago and it served as a navigation centre near the Godavari River for the colonial administration. In this context, Local 18 spoke to the locals visiting the area about the towns and revealed many interesting facts.

“About 120 years ago, British citizen John Kevin and his wife Sarah Kevin came to the Dummugudem Mandal Centre of Bhadradri Kothagudem district and built many buildings in this area. Moreover, our ancestors said that they also built schools in this area at that time,” said KVVS Murthy, who works as a teacher at Narasapuram Government School in Bhadradri Kothagudem District.

He added that although the buildings built in this area are currently dilapidated, the architecture portrays the higher skill of British Engineering.

KVVS Murthy said that different types of dry materials and lime were used in the old structures instead of cement which is currently used by many architects. Murthy says that multi-storied construction was something to be observed in those days.

Murthy said that if you look at the houses built by the British in the centre of Dummugudem, not only will the surrounding areas be clearly visible due to the construction of tall houses but proper ventilation facilities are also available.
