MADURAI: Police on Monday arrested an unqualified midwife for attempting an abortion on a 22-year-old woman, resulting in her death on Sunday.Veerammal (22), a widow residing at Thandalai village, near Palamedu, in the district, died owing to excessive bleeding when ‘midwife’ Amutha attempted abortion. Amutha of Kodangipatti, who worked as a helper in a private hospital earlier, had started an illegal abortion clinic at her house. According to Alanganallur police station Inspector, Veerammal had an affair with a man in the village, which resulted in her pregnancy. As her pregnancy had crossed six months, fearing her mother, Veerammal approached Amutha for abortion. The police arrested Amutha and confiscated surgical equipment from her house.
