THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: International Institute of Social Entrepreneurs (IISE), Vellayani, will organise a camp on June 18 from 10 am to 4 pm for children with multi-sensory disability and for children of sex workers along with their parents. The camp is spurred by the inspiring success of a similar camp that was held last year. The camp is organised to enhance the bonding between children and their mothers and to facilitate interaction between abled children and disabled children through ‘Fun therapy’. The inmates of Crest, an organisation for children with multi-sensory impairment, and Chilla, a NGO for the children of sex workers, will participate in the camp."We have formed three main committees - one for parents, one for children one for overall coordination. Last year, we had only 15 children with parents. This time around, there will be 29 children from Crest along with their parents and 15 children from Chilla and five mothers,’’ says Janice Oommen, communication and participant co-ordinator, IISE.A world of activities will be organised at the camp. There will be ice-breaking sessions, separate for children and parents, and discussions will be held on issues related to teenage children. Besides, group activities for children of different age groups and interaction between parents of disabled children and other parents (sex workers) will also be held. Stage performances, including a drama by the children of Chilla, have also been arranged on the occasion."Abled children living under the taboo of being children of a sex worker should understand what it means to be a multi-sensory disabled kid and vice versa. Multi-sensory children come from below average background and they rarely get a chance to mingle with other children. The main objective of the camp will be to bring together these children and foster a good relation among them,’’ says Janice.
