New Delhi: The state administration, which is under severe criticism for its handling of the situation in West Bengal's Nandigram, has decided to rope in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to ascertain the ground reality.
The West Bengal government's decision to ask the IB to evaluate the situation comes in light of the opposition parties' reluctance to attend recent meetings aimed at restoring peace in Nandigram.
Recently, the state government organised a meeting to review the situation in Nandigram, where 14 people were killed in police violence on March 14.
While eminent leaders like Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Chief Secretary A K Deb, Home Secretary Roy and state police chief A B Vohra attended the meet, members of the opposition decided to give it a miss.
News agency PTI quoted Home Secretary P R Roy as saying that there was no use in holding peace meetings if political parties stayed away from them.
"We have asked the Intelligence Bureau to ascertain if a congenial atmosphere exists in Nandigram for holding an all-party meeting. Let the IB give its report, we shall then convene an all-party meeting for restoration of peace," PTI quoted Roy as saying.
