The relationship between Shakespeare's tragic hero Hamlet and his mother Gertrude has always been a reason for discourse and debate among literature students and filmmakers. The haunted son, the seemingly apathetic mother, the struggle for power, have all been adapted on stage, in fiction and in films, over time.
Next month, the critically-acclaimed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj is set to release the latest instalment in the Shakespearian trilogy, 'Haider', based on 'The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark'. His first two films, 'Maqbool' and 'Omkara' were based on 'Macbeth' and 'Othello' respectively.
Speaking to the CNN-IBN entertainment editor Rajeev Masand in an interview, actress Tabu talked about the apprehensions and fears that she had to overcome, before she took on the key role of the troubled hero's mother in 'Haider'.
"Yes, Vishal had to convince me for the longest time for this role," admitted the 42-year-old actress in the interview. "I just wasn't sure how people would react to seeing me in that role on the big screen," she said.
"I wasn't sure I'd look like his mother, or rather, step-mother, you know," said Tabu. But she said that Vishal Bhardwaj explained that he didn't want Tabu to look like a mother; rather he wanted her to look like his lover.
"I finally came around then, and I'm glad I decided to be a part of the film," said Tabu.
Apart from Kapoor and Tabu, 'Haider' also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan Khan in key roles. The film is set to release on October 2 this year.
