CHENNAI: Students from a dozen city colleges, who gathered at DG Vaishnav College's Iris 2012 on Wednesday, got a glimpse of realtime cinema through their interaction with director Jayendra and cinematographer Balasubramaniem.Jayendra, director of 180 movie and several ads inaugurated the fest and answered the questions of students. Responding to a question on pursuit of becoming a good director, Jayendra said that he believed in doing things in the best possible ways. Another student asked why the Phantom Flex was used in 180, for which, the director replied it would capture the moment completly. “It is the story of a man who had been living his life to its fullest potential, as he knew that his life was going to be short. For him, every second will be a great deal of time. So, the Phantom Flex was used for a song in that movie to capture even the minute details in a second,” he detailed. On the recent trend of Tamil cinema, the director said that it was a cycle in which a genre would gain prominence and added that the genre that had momentum at present was realism coupled with village subjects. “However, filmmakers have the tendency to omit the craft wilfully taking the genre for granted,” he observed.Jayendra also noted that there was a big vaccum in the visual effects sector in India due to the lack of institutions and tailor-made courses to suit the needs of the industry. In a lighter vein, he noted that the hero is bigger than the production in India, whereas it is vice-versa in Hollywood. On very few 3D Hollywood movies being screened in India, Jayendra said that it required a specific technology to screen 3D movies. Cinematographer Balasubramaniem said that the digital film making will take over the traditional film-based technoloy, as it would be beneficial for the producers as well. Balasubramaniem also answered the questions of the students on lighting.
