KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday observed that it is high time that the government framed a scheme for the eviction and rehabilitation of poramboke land occupants.“A lot of people in the state live on poramboke land on roadsides causing obstruction to the road widening work. Moreover, they have every possibility of meeting with accidents. The government needs to rehabilitate them,” the court said, and directed the state to file a report in this regard within a month.A Division Bench, comprising Justice C N  Ramachandran Nair and Justice Babu Mathew P Joseph, passed the order while considering an appeal filed by Krishnankutty Ammu of Kottayam challenging Single Judge’s order to uphold the government decision to evict him from the road poramboke. The petitioner submitted that if evicted from the land he had no place to go. The court said that there will be a stay against the immediate shifting of the petitioner. The court also pointed out its earlier order on widening of the NH17 and NH47 with a minimum width of 45m within a timeframe. This will also require rehabilitation in large number. The court sought the view of the government on these facts and asked to file a report.
