New Delhi: Haryana on Friday agreed to release raw water from its quota in Yamuna to Delhi which is reeling under shortage of water due to a breach in the upper Ganga canal in Uttar Pradesh. Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda agreed to provide Delhi around 240 cusecs of raw water from its share in Yamuna following a request by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Areas in East and South Delhi on Friday faced water shortage as Uttar Pradesh cut raw water supply to the city from the upper Ganga canal to plug a breach. The Upper Ganga canal supplies around 450 cusec of water to Delhi, out of which 200 cusec is supplied to the Bhagirathi plant and 250 cusec goes to Sonia Vihar plant. Water treated by Sonia Vihar plant and Bhagirathi plant is supplied to East and South Delhi localities.
Senior Delhi government officials said supply of around 240 cusecs of raw water by Haryana will help Delhi meet the shortfall. "The situation is expected to return to normal in southern and eastern parts of the national capital. The water from Haryana would be lifted from Wazairabad," said the officials. Dikshit thanked Hooda for his help in providing water from its quota. The officials said the UP government has taken up the work on a war footing to fix the breach.
