THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sports Department will launch an investigation into the corruption allegations related to the construction of the swimming pool at Pirappancode in the district, Sports Minister K B Ganesh Kumar has said. Announcing the department’s plans in the Assembly on Monday, Ganesh Kumar said that despite spending crores of rupees on the pool, it remains a breeding ground for mosquitoes. An amount of ` 7 crore was spent from 2000 to 2011 on the pool. ‘’As much as ` 12.5 lakh was spent for filling it with water alone. Water was transported from afar, when it could have been done for ` 4-5 lakh by constructing borewells nearby. Power connection to the set-up was given only after we visited the place a few days ago,’’ Ganesh Kumar said, adding that stern action would be taken.SPORTS CLUBSGovernment funds will be allotted to establishments such as the Trivandrum Tennis Club (TTC) only if they sign an agreement assuring entry to athletes sponsored by the state government, he said. ‘’A sum of ` 3 crore was sanctioned to the TTC during M Vijayakumar’s term as Sports Minister, but no agreement had been signed. This has been corrected,’’ Ganesh Kumar said. ‘’The government will spend money only where government-sponsored sportspersons are allowed entry. They will be issued appropriate ID cards for the purpose,’’ he said. His department’s emphasis would be on the well-being of sportspersons, the Minister said.
