KOCHI:  The future of 120 students studying at the Government Commercial Institute, Kaloor, is under threat. The Revenue authorities have asked us to shut down the building and hand over the key to Elamkulam village officer within five days, said a staff member. The institute which has a history dating back to the days of the Maharaja is one of the 17 similar institutions functioning in the state. The course diploma in secretarial practices was started near the High Court premises initially and it has been 17 years since they moved to Kaloor. “Almost all the students studying here are from far away places and the sudden relocation, along with impending final examinations, will adversely affect the students. The majority of the students are from poor families and see the course as a way of getting a government job,” said Vishnu Mohan, the student chairman.  The HChas directed that the building where National University of  Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) functioned and its surrounding be allocated to Family Court and Juvenile Court, he said. Both the NUALS building and the commercial institute building have the same survey number which is the main reason for the issue.  Unlike the earlier case, a place to relocate has not been suggested or found and the technical institute is left in the lurch. If they are evicted, the students won’t have a place attend classes.
