SOMWARPET: Kodagu, a tiny district of the state is well known for hockey. The district had contributed hundreds of international and national level hockey players  to the nation.  For the first time the under 14 girls hockey team has carved the name  in national level hockey. These girls emerged champions at the state-level hockey tournament held in Bangalore. These girls who made district proud come from poor families. They never dreamt of representing the state at the national level tournament which will be held  in Punjab soon. The government school lacking basic facilities, doesn’t have a proper play ground, coach or equipment. Fortunately the village hockey players B S Suresh and Prashanth trained these girls with school physical education teacher Ramesh. The girls first emerged champions at the district level hockey tournament held in Virajpet and then qualified for the state tournament, in which they beat Gulbarga, Bangalore and Mysore teams. Physical education teacher Ramesh said the shoes, uniform and hockey sticks were donated. He said the former GP president K A Yakoob and ZP members have assured to provide more help.He said if we provide basic needs to these girls they can perform much better at the national level. Hockey team captain Pavithra said that the girls can’t afford to buy good sports equipments. Those who wish to help these girls can contact coach Ramesh on 8762818229.
