KOCHI: Security of inmates at the Government Girls’ Home in Kakkanad is still at stake. The  victims from Paravoor and Kothamangalm are housed here. Though, a Paravoor sex scandal victim had already lodged a complaint that neither she nor the other inmates are safe inside the girls’ home, the Social Welfare Department is yet to understand the gravity of the situation. The process of rebuilding of the wall is only in its initial phase. Moreover, no steps have been taken to build the missing wall.Though the works are on, the authorities seemed to be unaware of the missing wall on the right side of the Kerala Press Academy building. ‘Express’ had already pointed out the gravity of this situation. However, the authorities are yet to respond to this. “We have taken steps to rebuild the low wall to block the entry of anti-social elements into the compound. As far as we know, no wall is missing behind the girl’s home,” said Hashim, chief engineer, Public Works Department (buildings).Although, the walls on the two sides of the Government Children’s home look massive, the one  bordering a pocket road is unsteady as the foundation of the wall has started crumbling. “This unsteady massive wall poses a real threat to us as our houses are situated very close to it,” said a local who did not want to be named. When contacted K Mukundan, District Social Welfare Officer, said that such an issue has not come into his notice. “I am not aware of it. I will soon look into the matter,” said Mukundan. The residents also said that they are living in constant fear as anti-social elements have made this thickly weeded area  their safe haven. One of the PWD officials also informed that the labourers working on the site have informed them that they have seen somebody sneaking into the compound. “When he saw the workers on the site he ran back at once,” he said. The area near the Kerala Press Academy is surrounded by wild growth. The PWD officials confirmed this. “The area is completely cut of from the local residents. Measures should be taken immediately to clear this growth,” he added. The lack of coordination among the authorities is also making the matter worse. Though the PWD (buildings) chief engineer said that they have taken every measure to start the rebuilding work. The officials of the PWD, Kakkanad, who are to monitor the work said that they have not received any documents and information regarding the work.
