RGGGH rakes in the huge sum under the Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme launched in Feb; put it to good use, Minister urges hospital authorities

In a major accomplishment, the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) has staked claim for a whopping Rs 25 crore, for surgeries performed under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Launched by CM J Jayalalithaa in February, the apex hospital has already operated on 7,000 of the 10,000 patients registered under the scheme. “We have already collected the claim for Rs 14.11 crore, while the remaining amount is still being processed by the insurance provider,” said hospital dean Dr V Kanagasabai.

State Health Minister Dr V S Vijay urged the hospital to expedite the process of disbursing the funds — both as a form of giving staff a monetary bonus and uplifting the infrastructure in the hospitals as well.

“There is no point in receiving the money and leaving it unspent. That is akin to throwing it away. You have always said that the walls need plaster, new toilets need to be built and more security guards are required. By all means, use the allocated amount of money earned to make all these things a reality,” he said.

As per the rules of the scheme, 60 per cent of the insurance money was to be used to purchase medical consumables, while 25 percent was for infrastructural development and 15 per cent for those who conducted the surgery. “People need encouragement in any possible way, so I urge you to procure the rest of the money (around Rs 10 crore) immediately,” he added.

The Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme is vastly different from the health insurance scheme launched by the previous government as it is ‘more transparent,’ said Vijay. He also pointed out that this scheme benefited government hospitals more than private hospitals.

As many as 1,056 diseases and ailments are covered under the scheme, with treatment options for only 16 available in state-run hospitals.
