It was another field day for the Health Minister Dr VS Vijay. After he conducted a quickfire surprise inspection of the Government Royapettah Hospital on Tuesday, Vijay managed to inaugurate the inter-collegiate cultural gala at the Madras Medical College — and it was all in a day’s work.
When he visited the GRH, he found that there was garbage in a certain part of the hospital, that had not been cleared for a while.
After he sought an explanation from the sergeant in-charge of supervising cleanliness, he suspended the official and also issued a memo to two senior healthcare staff, for their lapses in duty.
Hospital sources said that a senior doctor was caught unawares when the Minister asked him to recount the cases that he had examined in the outpatient ward, that morning.
When it came to light that no entry had been made into the ledger - a serious lapse in protocol - he was issued a memo immediately. The Minister also found trolleys lying across the hospital corridors and sought an explanation from the matron for not clearing them, which was not forthcoming. He immediately issued a memo to the grade 1 nursing superintendent for negligence in duty.
After he was done with the stern action, Dr Vijay proceeded to inaugurate Revivals 2012 - the annual cultural gala of the Madras Medical College.
Spread across four days, the cultural competitions will see participation from more than 30 city colleges. “Studying medicine for all these years can be extremely stressful. It is events like these that will help you relax, so that you can return to duty with increased concentration and a better frame of mind,” he told the students.
He also said that he related to their stress levels that accompany studying in a premier institution like MMC, as he was a student of a government medical college himself and went on to serve as a orthopaedician in State-run hospitals thereafter.
Along with Dr Vijay, actor Anjali had also come on the behest of the students to give their culturals a ‘glamorous’ kickstart. She appreciated the students for their various life-saving initiatives like the blood donors club and said that it was an honour for her to be there.
