CHENNAI: Car major Ford India on Friday announced fresh investments to the tune of Rs 750 crore in its car manufacturing plant at Maraimalai Nagar near here to produce the new model Ford Eco Sport. Ford India President and Managing Director Michael Boneham conveyed this to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at a meeting held at the State Secretariat here. The new unit would create additional employment opportunities for about 400 people.Including this investment, Ford’s investment will be of the order of Rs 1,130 crore after the government headed by Jayalalithaa assumed office in May last, an official release said.Boneham thanked Jayalalithaa for the pioneering role played by her in attracting investments of Ford and for the continued support of the State government. He told the Chief Minister that because of the excellent investment climate prevailing in Tamil Nadu, many more US firms were looking at TN for investment opportunities.Ford has also set up its global business service centres in Chennai and Coimbatore which among themselves employ more than 5,000 people, many of them young women.Ford set up its first unit in Chennai in 1995 during the earlier tenure of Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister of the State. This was the first major investment by a foreign company in Tamil Nadu in the automotive sector which triggered the subsequent automobile revolution in Tamil Nadu.
