KOLLAM: A fire broke out in a wholesale footwear mart near the Chinnakkada Mosque at Payikkada Road here on Tuesday evening. The showroom and the godown of the shop were gutted in the fire. No casualty was reported and the damage to property is yet to be ascertained. Police said that the showroom and godown of Anas Footwear, owned by one Salim, caught fire around 6.10 p.m. Firetenders had a tough time dousing the fire as the shop had a huge stock of rubber footwear. As many as 10 fire tenders from various parts of the district were pressed into service. The fire was brought under control after one-and-a-half hours before it spread to adjacent shops and houses, Fire and Rescue Services sources said.The fire created panic among the public as dense smoke billowed out from the shop and the police immediately diverted the traffic on the street. Several persons suffered minor bruises during rescue operations.While the police are yet to find out the cause of fire, an employee of the shop raised doubts that the fire was triggered by an electric spark in an adjacent shop where welding work was going on.
