A few minutes after it took off, the fire alarm went off in the cockpit of a Kolkata bound IndiGo flight, forcing the pilot to make an emergency return to Chennai airport on Saturday.
The plane took off at 8.20 am and the alarm began flashing immediately after, causing the plane to radio ATC for help and effect an emergency landing at 8.35 am. Once it landed, all the passengers were hurriedly deplaned and the fire engines rushed to the plane. Airport sources have indicated that the 6E 253 was scheduled to leave at 8.10 am.
According to sources, though there wasn’t any smoke coming from the cargo-hold, from where the alarm emanated, the landing was necessary.
Eventually, all the 181 passengers were deplaned and taken into the terminal without any trouble. Aircraft engineers determined that there was no fire in any part of the aircraft and that the alarm was likely to have been triggered by a faulty relay line or some part overheating.
While the plane had to be grounded for technical inspection, the IndiGo flight to Delhi was rerouted to fly through Kolkata and departed with all the passengers at 11.05 am.
