Devendra Patil was fined Rs 50,000 for filing a petition challenging the validity of caste certificate issued to NCP corporator from Navi Mumbai Ashok Patil.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday imposed cost of Rs 50,000 on a petitioner, for filing a frivolous case.

Devendra Patil, the petitioner, had challenged the validity of caste certificate issued to Ashok Patil, an NCP corporator from Navi Mumbai. Petitioner contended that Ashok Patil does not belong to the Kunbi caste which falls in OBC category. Patil is actually a Maratha, he said.

Division bench of Justices D K Deshmukh and N D Deshpande observed that not only the contention was baseless, but no fundamental right of the petitioner had been breached in this case. Court therefore imposed cost on him.
