KOCHI: As part of the mass treatment programme for filariasis, a three-day distribution of preventive medicine began in the district on Thursday. The programme was inaugurated by District Panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappilly at the primary health centre in Kakkanad. The mass treatment programme aims to distribute filariasis medicines to 29 lakh people in the district in three days. The district has been divided into various units and the medicines are being distributed to the households under each unit. The District Medical Officer said that 13,650 volunteers have been entrusted with the distribution of the medicines at the house-level, with one volunteer in charge of 50 houses. A total of 1,365 supervisors have been assigned the distribution charges.Eldhose Kunnappilly said that the programme aimed at preventing the transmission of the causative microbe from human to mosquito. The distribution will also take place via government hospitals, primary health centres and other important public centres. As per the treatment programme, children between the age of 2 and 5 will be given 1 tablet, those in the age group of 6-14 will be given 2 tablets and those above 14 years of age will be given a dosage of 3 tablets. Children below the age of 2, pregnant women and people suffering from severe illnesses have been left out from the programme. The programme will conclude on Saturday.
