CHENNAI: At some point, artists decide they want to do more than just paint portraits on canvas. And this fact was again established at the new art gallery, The Victoria Hall, on  TTK Road. The gallery is owned by Sheetal Parrekh.Inspired in part by God and his power, artist Yogi Sunando Basu has made abstract paintings that convey the power of a divine entity. Sunando Basu subscribes to the idea that the process of making an artwork is as important as the final product itself. He has  punctured, scorched and imprinted spiritual bodies on canvas. He has taken the idea a step further by generating healing energy through his paintings. He claims that people can experience positive vibrations from his paintings. His paintings, he says, also increase an individual's awareness of time, space, body and the ethereal communication that one has with God.His works along with another artist, Arun Kumar Samadder, have been showcased in an exhibition titled God and Her Essence. The exhibition has a series of Godly figures by Arun Kumar Samadder: Goddess Durga sitting on a tiger, Lord Shiva meditating and people having a dip in the Ganges. While Sunando Basu concentrates on the essence of the painting — the healing power, Arun Kumar, works on Indian Mythology; breathing life into the godly figures through his fine artworks. Pencil, water colour and charcoal on canvas are the mediums the artists prefer. Sunando Basu’s sketches of divine power have a lot of texture. Unlike most other artists, he follows a series of spiritual practices before beginning to paint. He says, “If you observe my paintings for a few hours and meditate, you will be able to feel a healing power. In fact, at one point, you will feel that the painting is not just a still image.” By turning Godly figures into living gods, both Arun Kumar and Sunando Basu experiment with the inner world. The artists take nearly five to six months to complete a painting as they need to keep theirhearts and souls clean while carrying out their work.(The exhibition is on till December 31 at The Victoria Hall, TTK Road.
