An elderly man was allegedly assaulted by his co-passengers in an express train near Igatpuri in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on suspicion that he was carrying beef, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said on Saturday.
The GRP has initiated a probe after a video of the alleged incident, which took place earlier this week, surfaced on social media.
As per the video which is surfacing online, nearly a dozen men can be seen assaulting and verbally abusing Ashraf Munyar in train over a meat-like substance in two big plastic boxes that he was carrying. “What are you carrying? Where are you going? Don’t you get goats there? You know its our festivals going on?”
According to the GRP, the victim, Haji Ashraf Munyar, a resident of Jalgaon district, was travelling to his daughter’s house in Kalyan when his co-passengers near Igatpuri allegedly beat him up on suspicion that he was carrying beef.
After the video went viral, the Government Railway Police (GRP) contacted the elderly person. Reportedly, the victim was not ready to lodge a complaint initially.
“We have taken cognisance of the video and identified the victim. Some of the people involved in the attack have also been identified, and a probe is on,” the official said.
The police have identified two accused who are residents of Dhule. A police team has also been sent to Dhule to look for them.
