New Delhi: In the dock for holding a placard reading ‘Smash Brahmanical Patriarchy’, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has now told the Rajasthan High Court that he "does not subscribe to the views that Brahmins are a patriarchal community."
Dorsey has been compelled to move the HC following registration of an FIR against him on the order of a magistrate over the incident last month.
Dorsey, who was in India recently, met with a group of women journalists for a closed-door roundtable discussion on how Indians experience Twitter. However, the interaction came under fire after one of the journalists present there tweeted a photo of Dorsey with the placard.
Subsequently, a complaint was made before a magistrate, who ordered registration of the FIR under charges of defamation, creating hatred between religions or communities, insulting religious beliefs etc.
Dorsey has hence moved the HC for getting the FIR quashed on the ground that he was not complicit in the act and that he did not even understand the meaning of the placard he was holding.
“The petitioner is unaware of the history and complexity of the caste system in India. He has no idea, whatsoever, as to what connotation the expression 'Brahminical Patriarchy' has, and does not subscribe to the views that Brahmins are a patriarchal community,” stated the CEO's petition.
Dorsey, in his plea, added that when he was gifted the placard, he “innocently” held it without understanding the “full and complex meaning of the placard”.
Maintaining that no criminal offences were made out against him, Dorsey said that he neither published the photograph of his holding the placard nor did he retweet it, making it clear that he was not endorsing the placard and was also not responsible for publication of the alleged offending contents.
He has also requested the HC to stay further proceedings in connection with the FIR lodged on the complaint of one Rajkumar Sharma.
