NEDUMBASSERY: The Cochin International Airport is all set to offer a service that will touch your heart.Cochin International Airport Limited is soon to open its doors to provide special care for people with heart ailments and other cardiac issues.A new system that operates with the Power Heart Automated External Defibrillators (PHAED), which is a special heart protection equipment, will be operational at the Kochi airport from Saturday.The new equipment will be useful for patients suffering from sudden cardiac arrest, which in usual scenario can cause death in about six minutes.The PHAED gives an electric shock to the patient’s heart, thereby helping him to regain his normal heart rate.The Cochin Airport is the first in Kerala to get this equipment installed.The Emergency Response Team in CIAL would be trained to use the equipment.The PHAED was installed at CIAL with the cooperation of Heart Care Foundation and Opto Circuits India Limited.During the launch of the new equipment on Saturday, noted cardiac surgeon Dr Jose Chacko Periyappuram would be taking a class on heart attacks.Airport Managing Director V J Kurien and Optocircuit MD will also attend the session.The Kochi airport has a daily traffic of more than 12,000 passengers.The new facility will be available at the domestic as well as the international terminals of CIAL.As of now, the Power Heart Automated External Defibrillators have been installed in Delhi and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporations and the Mumbai Press Club.
