KOCHI: With the district panchayat all set to raise stiff opposition against installing a new plant at Brahmapuram, the Kochi Corporation is raking its brain to justify its stand. The issue assumes importance as the district panchayat president has criticised the civic body's plan to set up a new plant at Brahmapuram adjacent to the existing one which is in a dilapidated condition.District panchayat president Eldose Kunnappally, had said that they would prevent the Corporation's move to construct a new plant at Brahmapuram. "The Kochi Corporation has flouted all norms set by the High Court. The plant was also not in accordance with the norms set by the Pollution Control Board. Construction of another plant is not the panacea for the problems being faced by the people living in and around the Brahmapuram plant," Eldose Kunnappally said.He alleged that the Corporation had promised that it would take immediate steps for sanitary land filling. But it has not kept the promise. The Corporation is burying the waste even without removing the plastic waste, which has already polluted the Kadambrayar."Why are they not coming up with a project that could bring about a decentralised waste treatment system? We are trying to inculcate an ecofriendly culture based on decentralised waste treatment. The introduction of a new plant would turn the plan upside down. The residents of VadavukodePuthencruz panchayat is bearing the brunt for no fault of theirs," he said. Eldose Kunnapilly alleged that the Kochi Corporation has not heeded their demand to inquire into the squandering of Rs 20 crore.
