Disgraced Asiad athlete denies suicide attempt
Santhi Soundarajan failed the gender test during the Doha Asian Games.

New Delhi: Santhi Soundarajan, who failed the gender test after winning the silver medal in the women's 800 meters at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, denied that she attempted suicide on Wednesday.

Her neighbours found the disgraced athlete unconscious outside her home with police officials saying it was a case of attempted suicide.

Her neighbours say Santhi was apparently frustrated. She had returned to her home in Thatchakurichi, which is near Pudukkottai, on Wednesday morning after a two-day trip to Chennai.

Pudukkotai District Superintendent of Police Kapil Kumar C Saratkar said, "Shanthi is able to speak and she has denied that she attempted suicide. She maintains that she took some medicines for stomach pain."

Saratkar said the doctors had declared her condition to be stable.

"However, we do not want to take any risk and we are referring her to Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital for further examination," the official said.

The doctors, who attended on her, said that she had consumed some "veterinary medicines".

Despite her medal being taken away, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi gave her a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh.
