BHUBANESWAR: Dengue has claimed one life even as the State Government on Saturday deputed a high-level expert team to the affected pockets of Angul district. The patient was admitted to Ayush Hospital here.According to hospital sources, the patient, Bunesh Samanta (34) of Nuahat under Banrapal police limits, was brought here at around 8.30 pm on Friday. He was in a critical condition with evident signs of hemorrhagic dengue.Bunesh was suffering from typical dengue symptoms like fever, acute head and body pain for more than a week. He had also tested positive for dengue at MCL hospital in Angul. “We started treatment immediately while sending his sample to the SCBMCH for testing but he had slipped into shock. The blood platelet count had dropped to around 34,000 against the minimum required 1 lakh. He had even sustained internal haemorrhage with bloody stool and urine. There was little response to treatment and he eventually passed away at around 1 pm today”, Deputy medical superintendent of Ayush Hospital Dr N K Patnaik said.Meanwhile, the team, led by Director (Public Health) Dr Upendra Kumar Sahu and Deputy Director (Malaria) Dr Madan Mohan Pradhan would study the patterns of outbreak in the affected region and initiate appropriate measures to contain the spread of dengue. So far, 29 cases of dengue have been confirmed in the State. The bulk of the confirmed cases have been reported from Angul district. As of now, 49 persons have been suspected to have been afflicted with dengue. But samples have been tested in 41 cases of which 29 have tested positive. In Angul district, 24 out of 34 people tested positive. One person from Mayurbhanj and four out of six tested from Sundargarh district have been confirmed positive, Health Minister Prasanna Acharya said. Health Secretary Anu Garg held a review meeting on dengue. The disease was first detected in the State in 2006. In the subsequent years, there was no confirmation, while in 2010, about 261 samples were tested of which 29 were positive. This year, the outbreak has been particularly manifested in the industrial and mining belt of Angul district due to stagnant water bodies and puddles in the colliery belt as well as the industrial units. The industries have been directed to take preventive steps and urgent sanitisation measures.
