Three days after the mysterious death of a 21-year-old Manipuri girl, students and activist have come out in large numbers demanding a fair probe in the case. The girl was found dead in her rented apartment in Chirag Dilli, she was lying in a pool of blood. Police registered a case of suicide which is now being challenged by her relatives and friends. The girl was working in a Saket mall for the last three months.
For the last three days activists and students from the north-eastern fraternity have been holding protests outside Malviya Nagar police station. After sustained pressure, the police lodged an FIR under section 306 (abetment to suicide) but the protesters have been demanding a fresh FIR be registered under sections 302 (murder) and 304 (culpable homicide).
A press conference was held outside Malviya Nagar police station which was attended by Malviya Nagar MLA and Delhi Education Minister Kiran Walia, and social activist Binalakshmi Nepram.
"I have spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner in regards to this case. I've asked for a thorough investigation to be ordered in this case and have also asked for the postmortem to be re-conducted. Delhi Police Commissioner has assured me that the case will be transferred to special crime branch and a fresh FIR will be lodged in this case," Kiran.
Meanwhile, Binalakshmi claimed that that people from North East are being discriminated and demanded a thorough probe into the case.
"We have been asking for section 302 and 304 to be included in the FIR. We feel north-eastern people are being discriminated in the city. We demand a thorough probe into this. The girl was hit on her face but the police claims that rats ate up parts of her body," Binalakshmi said.
"My sister was being harassed by her landlord's brother-in-law who is missing. We want the police to see this case as a murder case and not write it off as a suicide. The police have been unfair to us; we have been running from pillar to post to even register an FIR. After three days of protests the police finally lodged an FIR but did not include sections of murder. The police maintain that she committed suicide by taking intoxicating pills," victim's cousin Bosco said.
The girl's body is lying at AIIMS mortuary, her family has been waiting for the last three days to carry out the last rites.
