New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has put on hold the disciplinary action taken by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration against students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. The two students are among those accused of sedition in connection with an event held on February 9 event where slogans were raised in favour of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
The HC had on May 13 granted the same relief to JNU Students Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar and others against whom disciplinary action was taken by the varsity after February 9 event row.
The court while passing the order said that Umar and Anirban are entitled to same order as passed by the court on May 13, 2016 for Kanhaiya and others.
It also said that protection granted to Umar and Anirban was conditional and the JNUSU would not indulge in any protest or 'dharna'.
While Umar was rusticated for one semester and slapped with a fine of Rs 20,000, Anirban was rusticated till July 15 and after July 23 he was barred from the university campus for five years. Bhattacharya was only given a week between July 16-22 to complete his thesis.
