Death of patient: Duty doctor, nurse sacked

KASARGOD: The duty doctor and a staff nurse at the General Hospital here were terminated from service following the death of a patient. Dr Sushil and nurse Remya, both temporary staff, were terminated from service following the report submitted by the DMO.Mohammed Shareef, 38, of Beejanthadka had died at the hospital after being giving a penicillin injection. However, according to sources at the General Hospital, when Shareef was admitted in the morning, the physician on duty had advised him against taking Penncon 12, which might have reaction on patients. The drug is not in use in the state. But the relatives of the patient brought the medicine from Mangalore and insisted that penicillin be injected.It is alleged that the IUML exerted pressure on the Chief Minister’s office and consequently the doctor and the staff nurse were suspended. Sources said the version of the hospital staff and the physician was not taken into account while the action was taken.Meanwhile, the SKSSF took out a demonstration in front of the General Hospital demanding that a case of homicide be registered against the hospital.
