Govt floated a new idea in RS saying court proceedings of important cases should be telecast live on television.

New Delhi: The Government on Wednesday floated a new idea in Rajya Sabha saying that court proceedings of important cases should be telecast live on television.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil said that the Government was considering the idea, but that they would need to consult a wider gambit of people including judges and lawyers before coming to a decision.

"What is happening in the court can be projected outside as proceedings are already public," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying in Rajya Sabha's Question Hour.

On the issue of "trial by media" in some cases, Patil told PTI that media had the liberty to discuss and project cases but it should desist from supporting or accusing someone.

He, however, ruled out enacting a law to curb 'media trial', though he did say that witness protection was needed - even from media exposure - to prevent witnesses from turning hostile.

"To ensure reliability of a witness during deposition in court and also contain the menace of witnesses turning hostile, the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2006 has been introduced," he told PTI.
