The City Corporation will start collecting plastic waste from roadsides and households from October 2, Gandhi Jayanti Day. Mayor K Chandrika will collect plastic waste from Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at Cliff House to launch the campaign.

The Corporation has also made it clear that plastic covers without the hologram issued by it kept for sale will be seized by the local body, in a bid to bring down the use of plastic.

At a press conference here, Chandrika said that the rates to be levied on the plastic covers (above 40 microns) based on the difference in microns will be notified soon. Once that is done, agencies will have to remit a certain amount with the Corporation and buy the hologram before the plastic covers could be sold.

‘’The increase in the rate of plastic covers will obviously bring down their use, we hope. Without the holograms, its sale will not be allowed within the Corporation limits,’’ she said.

Meanwhile, plastic waste collection will resume from Tuesday. ‘’The Satya Sai Orphanage Trust has entered into an MoU with the Corporation regarding plastic waste transportation. The Kudumbashree members will collect the plastic waste and this would be transported to the Trust’s plastic-treating unit at Thonnackal,’’ said Deputy Mayor G Happykumar.

In the beginning, Kudumbashree members will start collecting waste from nine wards within the city limits. The local body will observe October 2 as ‘Segregation Day.’ As part of this, different organisations, including Kudumbashree, police, student police cadets, NSS volunteers and youth wing outfits will clean up the Kovalam-Kazhakkoottam Bypass Road.

The cleaning will be inaugurated by Speaker G Karthikeyan at 8 am at Enchakal Junction. Urban Affairs Minister Manjalamkuzhy Ali, Mayor, MLAs and councillors will take part.
