CHENNAI: Advanced meters that can transmit data on energy consumption on a real-time basis will soon be installed by the Tamil Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).The move is expected to help curb line loss and theft, support better management of power distribution and augment planning efforts for future needs. The scheme is being implemented at a cost of `417 crore under the Union Government’s Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP).The intelligent meters will be installed in high voltage distribution transformers and feeders serving heavy users like industries. A special modem-like device will be attached to the meters of high tension (HT) and low tension current transformers/industrial and commercial (LTCT) consumers. The meters and devices at the HT and LTCT consumers will transmit data on energy consumption to the data centre. The information on consumption will be monitored continuously and stored. “If unusual power withdrawal from any particular section is detected, vigilance officials will be alerted. Based on the consumption pattern, energy distribution can be managed better,” a TANGEDCO official said. Work on installing the meters and the devices is on and is expected to be completed by July 2012.Asked if such advanced meters would be provided for domestic users, the official said the option was not being considered now. “Right now, the technology is a bit expensive. May be, after some years, when the cost comes down, such a recommendation can be made. Anyway, this is the future. Someday it must happen.”
