BANGALORE: While most colleges follow the slab of Rs1.25 lakh per annum fee structure, a look at the engineering colleges (non minority) list on the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges in Karnataka (COMEDK) shows that takers for engineering seats have gone so low that one college in South Kodagu has pegged its annual fee structure at Rs 35,000 for two courses. It is Rs 500 less that the fee decided under Government quota in engineering colleges.
This is not an exception, as at least 10 colleges have surrendered all their COMEDK seats to Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) allowing students to select seats in the government quota itself. Four other colleges have surrendered some of their COMEDK seats to KEA or surrendered less popular branches of engineering to KEA. Principal of a popular engineering college in Bangalore told Express that this phenomenon was predicted by former HRD Minister Kapil Sibal who said that students would opt for a college only if the quality was good; as getting an engineering college was no longer reserved for the top few students.
