Colleges to get new courses
Colleges to get new courses
In spite of financial strain, the government recognises the need to introduce new-gen, job-oriented courses

For a while now, the government has been in favour of introducing new generation job-oriented courses in tune with the changing times.

Colleges too have sought approval for aided courses. However, for various reasons, the programme has not taken off.  One of the reasons being that a large chunk of the government revenue is spent on pension. And this has put a spoke in the wheel, where the government has been unable to offer new courses to several colleges, including Maharaja’s which has been wanting to introduce new courses. But the high-level committee convened has decided to give each college a new course, said Excise and Fisheries Minister K Babu.

He was inaugurating the four courses at SH College Thevara on Monday.

High schools sans higher secondary will be upgraded to higher secondary schools in all municipalities and panchayat, he said.

He said that though Kerala was ahead in literacy and education, humane elements are lacking, but in other states like Bihar where education is backward, people are humane and  forward in their outlook, he said.

Stubborn idealism among leaders should not come in the way of education. Conventional courses should give way to new ones based on the developments in science and technology.  The concept of self-financing courses should change.

He said there is a need for improving the quality of media, both conventional and modern and the college should mould better mediapersons through the course.

Fr Paulose Kidangan, manager, SH College presided over the function. He said the Minister was instrumental in securing four new courses in the college.

Principal Prasant Palakkappillil welcomed the gathering. Dileepkumar, hon member, Syndicate, Chandrasekhara Pillai, PTA vice-president, Joseph Moolayil, staff secretary and T S Sojan, HoD of Commerce Department and K J Jose, Department head, unaided stream, offered felicitations.
