Jammu: Police probing the reported suicide of lieutenant colonel Pankaj Jha in Udhampur district traced a "distress SMS" sent by him to his mother prior to his death.
Lt Col had sent the message from mobile phone of a friend who has since "gone underground", according to Senior Superintendent of Police J L Sharma.
Jha's family had alleged that he was under work pressure and was being harassed by his seniors which led him to take the extreme step of ending his life.
However as per the police probe, Jha's suicide was not a case of harassment by seniors or heavy workload at all.
They says that it points to some domestic problem. Police registered a case after Jha an Electrical and Mechanical Engineers shot himself with his service pistol in Mahore in Udhampur on December 1.
The Army declared it a suicide but his mother Lalita Jha in a statement that he was under work pressure and being harassed by his seniors. She claimed when her son visited Bhopal, he was quite tense.
Sharma refuted claims, saying Jha visited Katra and stayed with his friend after getting leave from November 27 to December 7. He returned to duty at Mahore on December 1 even though his leave was sanctioned till December 7.
He said the police had traced a "distress SMS sent to his mother from the mobile phone of his friend, who seems to have gone underground since the suicide".
The text message was sent from the mobile of an employee of the air carrier operating helicopter services between Katra and Sanjichat.
