A multi-faceted personality and one of the early scholars who researched on folk art, C M Shankaran Nair, better known as C M S Chandera, passed away at the age of 83, on Sunday morning following age-related ailments at his house in Azheekode, Kannur.
CMS was born in Chandera of Pilikode panchayat in the district in 1933.
He has also worked for Malayala Manorama as Thrikaripur local correspondent for a short period.
He was teacher at Rajas High School in Chirakkal.
The first novel based on the Theyyam ritual was written by C M S Chendera.
‘Kaliyattam’, ‘Kannakiyum Chheermakkavum’ and ‘Poorakkali’ have been recognised by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi as outstanding creations.
CMS was given senior fellowship by the Central Cultural Department in 1998 for his contributions to the study of local folk arts.
He was also felicitated by the Kerala Folklore Academy for his contributions to the research and study of folk arts in 1987.
He is the son of renowned Sanskrit scholar Mangathil Kunhambu Ezhuthachan and Chanderi Madiyan Akkuvamma.
He survived by wife Vimala and son Sanjeevan Azheekode, who is a journalist and renowned folklore expert.
