Beijing: A government official in China's central province has been placed under judicial investigation after a photograph of him seen wearing an expensive Louis Vuitton belt went viral on social media.
Li Jianguo, general manager of a state-owned hydropower company in Rucheng county in Hunan Province, was lambasted by users on Weibo, the Chinese Twitter, who questioned how he could afford such an extravagant accessory, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The incident has prompted the government to launch investigations into his income and finances, the report said.
The online brouhaha was brought to the attention of the local Communist Party of China's (CPC) discipline watchdog, which responded by reviewing Li's finances and placing him under financial scrutiny.
The watchdog said it suspected Li had "broken the law and violated Party regulations", the report said.
As the country is going through the biggest crackdown against corruption, several high-profile officials in China have been facing public scrutiny after photographs of them sporting luxury watches and cigarettes were posted on social
media.
Hundreds of officials, including from army and top retired CPC leaders, have also been facing anti-graft cases.
The CPC had expelled one of its senior officials for accepting huge bribes. 58-year-old Shen Weichen received gifts and cash and committed adultery, according to an official statement.
Also, a former Chinese health official was recently sentenced to 13 years in jail for swindling USD 6.75 lakh and helping his "mistress" to profit from selling medical equipment to local governments.
