Chennai: Though a deadline of three months has been set for all integrated road development work taking place in the newly expanded areas of the city, Corporation officials say only the basic work can be completed before the monsoon. The final re-laying of the road with the bitumen mix can be done only after the monsoon ends, the officials told City Express.
However, officials have been asked to expedite the works before the rains. Works like desilting of drains, re-laying of interior roads and electricity cables has been going on across various parts of the city. More than 1,100 interior roads in the city have been identified for re-laying with the plastic mix at a cost of Rs 115 crore. In addition, another 1,000 roads have been listed for re-laying with concrete at a cost of Rs 100 crore.
Tenders have been floated and work has started on 104 interior roads for a package of Rs 55.32 crore out of the 1,646 roads in Alandur zone, a Corporation press release said. Road work in the 156th Ward of Mugalivakkam was inaugurated by Mayor Saidai Duraisamy, as part of the integrated road development project here.
Capital work on another 63 roads with a length of 14 kms has also started, officials said. “The roads in the newly extended areas of the Corporation are mud roads, while in some places there are no roads. Hence we are re-laying them,” said Corporation officials from Alandur zone.
