Centre's assurance of funds to BRO a poll gimmick: BC Khanduri

Casting doubts on Union Minister Oscar Fernandes's ssurance that the BRO will be given all the money required for road repair work in Uttarakhand, former Chief Minister Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri on Sunday said it might just be a pre-poll promise never to be fulfilled.

"I have long been raising the issue of BRO facing a funds crunch but none at the Centre has ever paid heed to it. My attempts to meet Fernandes could not materialise last year as he happened to be out of Delhi.

"Finally, I wrote a detailed letter to him in last August explaining the situation to him and demanding adequate funds for BRO but nothing came out of that. Now, when the elections are round the corner, such assurances are being given," Khanduri said in a statement.

In the last three financial years, the BRO had sought funds worth Rs 1200 crore from the Centre, out of which only Rs 150 crore were given. In the last fiscal (2012-2013), the BRO sought an amount of Rs 200 crore, out of which only Rs 20 crore were given to it.

"This shows the difference between what the Centre says and what it does," he said. At a meeting with Chief Minister Harish Rawat and BRO top brass in Haridwar on Saturday, Fernandes said whatever amount is sought by the BRO will be given to it for road repair and reconstruction work in Uttarakhand.

"It may just be a pre-poll promise never to be fulfilled," Khanduri said.
