Government says the Capital is tense and resuming campaign is not desirable; files plea in SC for traders.

New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday said it didn’t want to resume sealing of commercial establishments in residential areas from Thursday because the Capital is tense.

Several traders associations on Wednesday closed business as part their three-day bandh against the sealing campaign.

Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said the MCD and his ministry would on Thursday apprise the Supreme Court of the tension. "We hope that everything will work out in an orderly manner," he said after a meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) chaired by Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

Reddy was non-committal on whether the sealing will resume, saying it was up to the Supreme Court to take a decision.

"It is not appropriate for us to comment on the issue (whether the sealing will take place from tomorrow or not). It is up to the court to decide," Reddy said.

A court-appointed monitoring committee on the sealing campaign would have to take a decision, said Reddy.

Government pleads for traders

The Government on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court seeking permission not to resume sealing drive from Thursday against those who have given an undertaking to shift their businesses from unauthorised premises.

The application, filed by the Ministry of Urban Development, sought modification of the September 29 order by which the sealing was to commence on the premises of 44,000 traders, who were allowed to continue their business till October 31 in view of the festivals.
